Purpose of the Sierra Club California Convention
The Sierra Club California Convention is held annually, The occasion of the convention is used
- to elect the Executive Committee,

- to facilitate the exchange of views among Sierra Club leaders,
- to provide an opportunity for chapter and group leaders to meet and network with each other,
- to meet the SCC ExComm, RCC leaders and Sacramento staff,
- to learn what's happening in other chapters and about major state and national campaigns.
The convention has the following powers and responsibilities:
- It elects the Sierra Club California Chair and the members of the California Executive Committee.
- It may advise the California Executive Committee about what the priorities of SC California should be.
- It reviews and decides proposed bylaw amendments.
- It may advise the ExComm about standing rules adopted or proposed for adoption by the ExComm.
- It may advise the ExComm about the amount of dues allocations to chapters that should be used to support programs of Sierra Club California.
- It may endorse candidates for statewide offices.
- It confers Awards for outstanding contributions of it’s volunteers.
- It may act on any other matter referred to it by the California Executive Committee.
All Club members are welcome and are encouraged to attend.
Nomination and Election Procedure
- The Sierra Club California bylaws provide for a Nominating Committee of seven members: two from northern California, two from central California, two from southern California, and one from the California Conservation Committee.
- Additional nominations may be made at the Convention by a petition signed by at least ten Convention delegates.
- Nominees must be Sierra Club members who live in California and who agree to be nominated.
- No person may serve more than three consecutive full terms as a member of the Executive Committee.
- Each Convention elects a person to serve a one-year term as Sierra Club California Chair, and five persons to serve two-year terms on the California Executive Committee.
- If the person elected to be Chair is in the middle of a two-year term on the ExComm, the Convention elects five additional persons to the ExComm. If the person elected to be Chair is not an incumbent in mid-term, then he or she is automatically elected to a two-year term as an ExComm member, and the Convention elects four additional persons to the ExComm.
- Voting is by secret written ballot. The election for Chair is held first.
- The election of the other members of the Executive Committee is then held, and the nominees receiving the highest number of votes are elected. If there is a tie for the last position to be filled, a runoff election will be held among those tied. If there is a tie in the runoff, the winner will be chosen by lot.
- The California Conservation Liaison is elected annually at the September meeting of the California/Nevada RCC
